Arsene Wenger opens up about Alexis Sanchez’s failed move from Arsenal to Man City
Arsene Wenger reveals how close Alexis Sanchez was to signing for Manchester City from Arsenal this summer
Arsene Wenger has insisted that Alexis Sanchez was “not very close” to a transfer to Manchester City from Arsenal on deadline day.
The Chile international was heavily linked with a move to The Etihad throughout the summer and the 28-year-old was thought to be close to a switch in the final hours of the transfer window.
However, a move failed to materialise and Sanchez will now have to see out the remainder of his contract until next summer, when he could leave the club on a free transfers.
There were various reports suggesting that Sanchez was close to signing for Manchester City on deadline day, with some claiming that he had even signed a contract with the Citizens.
But Arsenal manager Wenger was in no mood to give much away when quizzed about the speculation linking Sanchez with a switch to Manchester City.
Arsenal boss Wenger said in an interview with beINSports: “It was not very close, it’s very difficult for me to speak about that because what I want now is the player to focus on his career, on his season and Arsenal.
“I always think first, make sure that my commitment is at the level that is expected from people paying me and have confidence in me. On the player’s side it is exactly the same.”
Sanchez will be expected to line up for Arsenal when the Gunners return to Premier League action after the international break with a home clash against Bournemouth at The Emirates.
Arsenal are aiming to bounce back from their disastrous 4-0 thrashing at the hands of Liverpool before the international break.
