John Hartson lavished praise on Jack Wilshere following the Arsenal midfielder’s impressive performance for the Gunners in their 4-2 Europa League victory over BATE Borisov on Thursday night.

The 25-year-old midfielder was restored to the starting line-up in Belarus as Arsene Wenger’s men made it two wins from two in their Europa League group stage campaign.

Wilshere produced an impressive display and laid on the assist for Theo Walcott’s opening goal with a superb cross in the ninth minute.

Reacting to Wilshere’s work for the opening goal, former striker Hartson said on BT Sport: “It was all about Jack Wilshere.

“It was absolutely world class, that piece of skill and his touch was exquisite. The vision to square it to Walcott… he has a simple header.

“Brilliant from Jack Wilshere even to just spot Walcott. That’s what we saw him doing when he first broke into the team.”

Walcott then scored again in the 22nd minute, before Rob Holding adding a third shortly after.

Mirko Ivanic headed a goal back for the home side before the break before striker Olivier Giroud scored his 100th goal for Arsenal from the penalty spot early in the second half. Mikhail Gordeichuk then netted a second for the hosts.

And reflecting on Wilshere’s overall performance for the Gunners, Hartson added: “He’s been outstanding.

“People will say, ‘well it’s only BATE’ – but he’s looked outstanding. Some of the things he did were exquisite.

“We know he can play. His ability has never been in doubt. He just needs a run of games and 90 minutes.”

Wilshere will be hoping to feature in Arsenal’s next game – a Premier League clash against Brighton and Hove Albion at The Emirates on Sunday lunchtime.

The Gunners head into that game on the back of their 2-0 victory over West Bromwich Albion at The Emirates in their most recent Premier League outing last on Monday night.
