Ian Wright has defended Alex Iwobi over some “unfair” criticism aimed at the Arsenal midfielder.

The Nigeria international was handed his first Premier League start of the season at Stamford Bridge last weekend.

Iwobi showed discipline to help protect Arsenal right-back Hector Bellerin in the goalless stalemate with Chelsea.

The African midfielder was talked up as a promising talent when he burst onto the scene at The Emirates.

However, Iwobi has struggled to kick on over the past 12 months after falling down the pecking order at the Gunners.

But the Nigerian playmaker can take confidence from his professional display at the defending champions.

Former Arsenal striker Wright believes Iwobi has been unfairly scrutinised in recent months.

“Every single player put in a huge shift to earn a richly-deserved draw, including Alex Iwobi, who came in for some unfair criticism in my opinion,” Wright told The Sun.

“He did a real job for the team.”

The north London side will host West Brom at The Emirates on Monday night fresh from three successive home wins in the Premier League, the League Cup and the Europa League.

Arsenal finished in fifth place in the Premier League table last season to miss out on a top-four spot.

The Gunners will welcome West Brom to The Emirates in the Premier League on Monday night.
