Arsene Wenger has attempted to explain his decision to substitute record signing Alexandre Lacazette during Arsenal’s goalless draw at Chelsea on Sunday afternoon.

The France international started his first Premier League game on the road after Wenger named the 26-year-old on the bench at Liverpool and Stoke City.

Lacazette has scored against Leicester City and Bournemouth in the Premier League so far following his £52m move to the Gunners from Ligue 1 side Lyon last summer.

The Arsenal striker was unable top beat Thibaut Courtois in the opening 66 minutes before Wenger opted to bring on Alexis Sanchez for his summer signing at Stamford Bridge.

Lacazette is still waiting to complete 90 minutes for the first time since his Premier League debut in a 4-3 win against Leicester at The Emirates.

Arsenal manager Wenger looked to shed light on his decision to take off his most-expensive player in the second half of their goalless draw with the Premier League champions.

“I felt Lacazette had a very good first half, he worked hard for the team and was very disciplined,” Wenger told his media conference.

“It takes him some time to maintain that intensity for 90 minutes. Don’t forget I have [Theo] Walcott, [Olivier] Giroud and [Alexis] Sanchez on the bench.

“After 65 minutes in a game of that intensity it’s normal that you bring fresh legs on.

“Does he understand that? I never ask any striker to understand that he has to make room for someone else. You never can do that.”

Lacazette scored 100 goals in 201 games in Ligue 1 during his seven-season spell in the Lyon first-team.

Arsenal have also signed Bosnian defender Sead Kolasinac in a free transfer from Bundesliga outfit Schalke 04.

The Gunners haven’t won the Premier League title since 2003-04.
