Martin Keown: Why I have no questions about Alexis Sanchez’s commitment to Arsenal
The Arsenal legend says Alexis Sanchez remains committed to the Gunners on evidence of his performance at The Emirates on Monday night
Martin Keown insists Alexis Sanchez’s performance in Monday night’s 2-0 win against West Brom highlighted the forward’s continued commitment to Arsenal.
The Chile international was thought to be on the brink of a move to Arsenal’s title rivals Manchester City in the summer transfer window.
Sanchez endured a tough 2016-17 season off the pitch despite scoring 24 times in 37 games in the Premier League following a reported fallout with Arsene Wenger.
The 28-year-old has entered the final 12 months of his current deal with Arsenal and the South American isn’t expected to sign a new contract.
Unless Arsenal manage to convince Sanchez to commit his future to the north London side, the Gunners forward will be available on a free transfer next summer.
Sanchez has scored one goal in five appearances in all competitions this season following his brilliant strike in a 3-1 victory over Cologne in the Europa League earlier this month.
Former Arsenal defender Keown was encouraged by Sanchez’s dogged performance in the Gunners’ 2-0 win against West Brom at The Emirates on Monday night.
“I didn’t have any question marks over Sanchez [on Monday night],” Keown told BBC Sport. “He just loves to play football. He is a delight to watch.”
Arsenal finished in fifth place in the Premier League table last season to miss out on a spot in this term’s Champions League.
The Gunners will make the trip to BATE Borisov in the Europa League on Thursday night.
