Arsene Wenger told not to start Alexis Sanchez for Arsenal
Charlie Nicholas explains why he thinks Danny Welbeck should be starting ahead of Alexis Sanchez for Arsenal
Charlie Nicholas believes that a fully-fit Danny Welbeck should start ahead of Alexis Sanchez in the Arsenal team.
Welbeck did indeed start ahead of Sanchez in Arsenal’s goalless draw with Chelsea at Stamford Bridge last weekend, with the Chile international coming on as a late substitute.
However, Welbeck picked up a groin injury against the Blues and is likely to be out of action until next month.
That means Sanchez is probably going to start for Arsenal when the Gunners host West Brom at The Emirates in their next Premier League game on Monday night.
However, former Arsenal star Nicholas claims that Welbeck should be in the Gunners’ first-choice starting line-up ahead of Sanchez.
Speaking on Sky Sports News on Thursday morning, Nicholas said: “Playing against Chelsea last weekend, you knew Welbeck had to start in front of Sanchez.
“At the moment Alexis Sanchez doesn’t fit in. Sanchez is the best player on his day but at the moment if Welbeck was fit, he starts.”
“[Welbeck is a guaranteed starter] because of his pace and his movement.
“He’s not the most natural finisher, and he will frustrate the life out of a lot of people but he stretches defences with his pace and movement every day of the week.
Arsenal head into their clash with the Baggies on the back of their 1-0 victory over Doncaster in the third round of the League Cup on Wednesday night.
The Gunners will be keen to pick up three points against Tony Pulis’ men, with Arsenal having only won two of their opening five Premier League games so far this season.
Arsenal finished fifth and won the FA Cup last season, and they have not lifted the Premier League trophy since their famous unbeaten triumph in 2003-04.
