Martin Keown replies when asked if Arsenal can trust Mesut Ozil

The Arsenal legend believes Arsene Wenger's trust in Mesut Ozil has been eroded over the past season or so

Martin Keown has claimed that Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger doesn’t trust Mesut Ozil any more.

The Gunners midfielder was left out of Wenger’s squad for their Europa League clash in Belarus as Arsenal eased to a 4-2 win against BATE Borisov.

Ozil was a late substitute in Arsenal’s 2-0 win against West Brom at The Emirates on Monday night as Wenger stuck with his side that has performed so well in recent weeks.

The World Cup winner was sidelined with a knee problem when Arsenal produced one of their best performances of the season in a goalless draw at defending champions Chelsea earlier this month.

The 28-year-old’s future at the north London club remains up in the air after failing to agree a new deal with the Gunners over the past 12 months.

Ozil, whose passive performances have attracted criticism throughout his Arsenal career, has entered the final 12 months of his current contract at the Emirates Stadium.

Arsenal will host promoted side Brighton in the Premier League on Sunday afternoon in search of a sixth successive home win in all competitions so far this season.

“I don’t think Wenger can completely trust him any more,” Keown told the Daily Mail.

“It does not surprise me that Ozil has not travelled. Wenger hasn’t taken him because he knows he won’t get a performance from him.

“We have been told that no-one in the Arsenal squad is at the same level as Sanchez and Ozil but against Chelsea, the others stepped up to the plate.

“I can see that Sanchez loves his football and can be totally committed. We don’t know with Ozil.

“If he wants to, Ozil can respond and tell us that he is 100 per cent committed. Maybe we will see a change in his performances.

“But, after playing just seven minutes against West Brom, Ozil will not play tonight. If he does not feature against Brighton on Sunday, we will have a greater understanding of what Wenger really thinks about him.”

Arsenal ended up in fifth place in the Premier League table last season to miss out on a Champions League spot.
