Frank Lampard: What Jack Wilshere must do to secure new Arsenal deal
The Chelsea legend has some advice for Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere about securing his long-term future at the Emirates Stadium
Frank Lampard has challenged Jack Wilshere to help Arsenal win the Europa League to secure a new long-term deal.
The England international is facing an uncertain future at the Emirates Stadium after Wilshere entered his final 12 months of his current Arsenal deal at the start of the season.
Wilshere spent the 2016-17 season on loan at Bournemouth and made two assists in 25 appearances in the Premier League but failed to secure a permanent move to the Cherries.
The 26-year-old has endured an injury-hit three or four seasons at the north London club which stopped the growing momentum in Wilshere’s career at The Emirates.
The Arsenal midfielder made his first appearance of the current campaign in a 3-1 win against Bundesliga outfit Cologne in the Europa League earlier this month.
Wilshere made his first start in a 1-0 victory over Doncaster Rovers as the injury-prone Arsenal star looks to justify a new deal with the north London club.
Former Chelsea midfielder Lampard believes the Europa League provides Wilshere with the perfect opportunity to inspire Arsenal to some European silverware and earn a new contract.
“The Europa League is a great opportunity for Jack Wilshere to show why he should get a new contract at Arsenal,” Lampard told the Evening Standard.
“With the difficult schedule of Thursday-Sunday games, Arsene Wenger will rotate a lot more – and that should mean more appearances for Jack.
“There have been positive signs already. He was very impressive as a substitute against Cologne, then against Doncaster last week, so he will surely play a part at Bate Borisov on Thursday.”
Lampard added: “There is a lot of talk over Jack’s future, because he is out of contract at the end of the season.
“I’m sure Arsenal would prefer to keep him, but they will want to see that he’s fit first. But, by doing that, Jack will be in a position of strength if he gets 100 per cent again.”
Arsenal will take on BATE Borisov in their second Europa League game in Belarus on Thursday evening.
