Ian Wright has hinted that Mesut Ozil’s muscle injury could be designed to spare the Arsenal midfielder the embarrassment of being left out of the Arsenal team.

The Germany international wasn’t named in the Gunners squad for their trip to Stamford Bridge on Sunday afternoon as Arsene Wenger named Alexis Sanchez on the bench.

The north London side battled to a goalless draw in west London in the absence of Ozil as Alex Iwobi and Danny Welbeck occupied the spots on the wing in the German’s absence.

The 28-year-old has made a disappointing start to the 2017-18 season and was heavily criticised for his abject performance in a 4-0 loss to Liverpool at Anfield last month.

The World Cup winner has refused to sign a new Arsenal deal despite the former Real Madrid midfielder entering the final 12 months of his current Gunners contract.

Former Arsenal striker Wright has controversially suggested that Ozil may have fabricated an injury to spare his blushes ahead of the north London side’s trip to the defending champions.

“Ozil all of a sudden has this muscle injury that has come out of nowhere,” Wright told BBC Radio 5 Live.

“He didn’t play against Cologne. Did he get it in training? I think he got wind that Wenger was going to play Iwobi and Welbeck and all of a sudden got this injury.”

Arsenal are in twelfth place in the Premier League table following a return of seven points from their opening five games.

Ozil moved to the Gunners in a £42.5m deal from Real Madrid in 2013.
