Jamie Carragher has questioned why Arsenal didn’t go all out to sign N’Golo Kante ahead of Chelsea in the 2016 summer transfer window.

Kante became a hot property in the Premier League in the 2015-16 season as the France international helped Leicester City to win an unprecedented title.

Chelsea managed to sign the 26-year-old in a £30m deal from the Foxes despite Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger showing an interest in the holding midfielder.

Kante was instrumental in helping Chelsea to win the Premier League title with two games to spare under Antonio Conte last season.

Indeed, the versatile midfielder was named the PFA player of the year for his role in Chelsea’s impressive performances.

Arsenal, on the other hand, dropped down from second place to fifth spot to miss out on the Champions League for the first time under Wenger.

Former Liverpool defender Carragher believes Kante would have been the ideal signing to help transform Arsenal into genuine title contenders.

“Conte has N’Golo Kante, a player Arsenal wanted last year but who joined Chelsea for a bargain £32m,” Carragher told the Evening Standard.

“He was one of Conte’s first signings, which shows how important he felt a player like that is to his system, whereas Wenger hesitated.”

Arsenal will make the trip to Chelsea in their next Premier League game at Stamford Bridge on Sunday afternoon.

The Gunners signed Lyon striker Alexandre Lacazette and Schalke 04 defender Sead Kolasinac in the summer transfer window.

The north London side are in eighth place in the Premier League table.
