Arsene Wenger gives latest update to Arsenal fans about Mesut Ozil
Arsene Wenger delivers the latest update on Mesut Ozil's contract situation at Arsenal
Arsene Wenger has insisted that contract talks with Mesut Ozil have not broken down and that Arsenal remain hopeful of tying him down to a new deal.
The 28-year-old Germany international has entered into the final 12 months of his current deal, with his contract set to expire at the end of the season along with Alexis Sanchez.
There were reports in the German media earlier this week claiming that talks between Arsenal and Ozil had broken down about a new contract.
However, Wenger has moved to reassure fans that he is confident Ozil will sign a new contract with the north London side.
Speaking at a news conference at Arsenal’s training ground on Wednesday, Wenger said: “Yes, of course (I am hopeful Ozil will sign a new deal).
“The contract talks have slowed down a little bit since August 31, because we need a little breather and to focus on the competition. But we will slowly get back into that.”
Ozil will be hoping to feature for Arsenal when the Gunners return to Premier League action on Sunday afternoon with a crunch clash against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.
Arsenal have won the last two encounters between the two sides by winning the FA Cup in May and the Community Shield in August – both at Wembley.
The Gunners are aiming to win the Premier League title for the first time this season since their famous unbeaten triumph in the 2003-04 campaign.
