Arsenal told they should have signed top 26-year-old
Arsenal should have tried to sign Virgil van Dijk from Southampton this summer, says John Hartson

Arsenal should have made a move to sign Virgil van Dijk from Southampton during the summer transfer window, according to John Hartson.
The Gunners were heavily linked with a host of players throughout the summer window but the north London side only ended up signing two new faces – Alexandre Lacazette and Sead Kolasinac.
Van Dijk’s future was a relentless source of speculation throughout the summer transfer window, with Liverpool thought to be very keen on luring him to Anfield.
However, despite the 26-year-old defender having handed in a transfer request at St Mary’s a move away from the South Coast club failed to materialise.
Arsenal have been widely criticised for their poor start to the new season, with the Gunners having conceded four goals in their opening three games.
And former Gunners star Hartson feels that Van Dijk would have been the perfect signing for the north London club this summer.
Hartson is quoted as saying by the Daily Express: “Why didn’t they go for Virgil van Dijk?
“They need defenders. Southampton weren’t going to sell to Liverpool but they might have sold to Arsenal.”
Arsenal return to Premier League action after the international break with a home clash against Bournemouth at The Emirates.
The Gunners find themselves in 16th place in the Premier League table after having lost two of their opening three games.
