Craig Bellamy sends direct message to Arsenal about transfer mess
The former Liverpool and Man City striker sends direct message to Arsenal about their underwhelming transfer window
Craig Bellamy insists Arsenal only have themselves for a discouraging summer transfer window.
The north London side sold England midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain to title rivals Liverpool in a £40m deal on Thursday’s transfer deadline day.
The 24-year-old had entered the final 12 months of his current contract and the Gunners decided to sell Oxlade-Chamberlain rather than lose the midfielder for nothing next summer.
Chile international Alexis Sanchez and World Cup winner Mesut Ozil are both in the final year of their Arsenal deals to cast a shadow over the north London side.
Title rivals Manchester City were heavily linked with a move to sign Sanchez throughout the summer transfer window but a deal failed to materialise.
However, Sanchez’s performance in Arsenal’s 4-0 loss to Liverpool on his first Premier League appearance of the new season won’t have filled Gunners fans with confidence.
Arsenal spent a club-record fee on Lyon striker Alexandre Lacazette and signed Bosnian defender Sead Kolasinac on a free transfer from Schalke 04.
But the north London side made no further additions on the final day of the transfer window much to the frustration of Arsenal supporters.
Former Liverpool and Manchester City striker Bellamy delivered his withering verdict on the Arsenal hierarchy following an underwhelming transfer window.
“I hate being like everyone else, critical of Arsenal, but they are in a mess,” Bellamy told Sky Sports.
“They’ve got themselves into a situation where the manager didn’t sign his contract, so a lot of players’ futures remained uncertain too.
“Arsenal have themselves to blame at this moment. They’re light on numbers as it is.”
