Jamie Carragher: Arsenal need world-class signing in key position to progress
The Liverpool legend urges Arsenal to sign a world-class defensive midfield signing to protect his fragile defence
Jamie Carragher believes Arsenal need to sign a world-class holding midfielder to improve their defensive performances.
The Gunners made two signings in the summer transfer window as Arsene Wenger snapped up Lyon striker Alexandre Lacazette and Schalke 04 defender Sead Kolasinac.
Arsenal have already conceded eight times in four games in the Premier League this season to undermine their title challenge.
The north London side’s defence has received criticism particularly after 4-0 loss to title rivals Liverpool at Anfield ahead of the international break.
Wenger signed Borussia Monchegladbach midfielder Granit Xhaka in 2016 but the £33m signing failed to convince in Wenger’s team last season.
Arsenal will make the trip to defending Premier League champions Chelsea in their next Premier League game at Stamford Bridge on Sunday afternoon.
Former Liverpool defender Carragher believes the Arsenal defence is exposed without the lack of cover in defensive midfield.
“The fact Arsenal didn’t really strengthen at the back apart from Sead Kolasinac, who is more of a left-back, shows where Wenger’s priorities are,” Carragher told Evening Standard.
“It’s not just the defenders – it’s the cover in midfield. Arsenal don’t have a great holding midfield player who can protect that back three.
“You look at Arsenal’s midfield and I can’t get out of my head how they performed at Anfield. There was a lack of discipline.”
Arsenal finished in fifth place in the Premier League table to miss out on a Champions League spot after finishing behind Liverpool.
The Gunners were 3-1 winners against Cologne in their Europa League opener at the Emirates Stadium on Thursday night.
The north London side have won two of their opening four Premier League games in the 2017-18 season.
