Thomas Lemar was right to turn down Arsenal’s offer to sign the France midfielder from AS Monaco, Stewart Robson has claimed.

The Gunners were linked with the 21-year-old throughout the summer transfer window as Arsene Wenger looked to further improve his attacking options.

However, the north London side were thought to be unwilling to surpass £50m for the France international in the current transfer market.

Liverpool were thought to be leading the race to sign Lemar heading into deadline day, while Arsenal striker Alexis Sanchez was being linked with a move to Manchester City.

Arsenal launched a fresh £92m bid to sign the attacking midfielder as a replacement for Manchester City-bound Sanchez before the close of the transfer window.

However, Lemar turned down the chance to move to Arsenal and Sanchez’s proposed move to Manchester City fell through.

Former Arsenal striker Robson backed Lemar’s decision to reject the Gunners given the regression of some big-name players at The Emirates in recent seasons.

“Thomas Lemar has made the right decision,” Robson said on ESPN FC.

“If you look at the history over the last few years of young players, top-quality players going to Arsenal, they’ve got worse.

“There’s no proper coaching going on, there’s no development of players.

“You look at the likes of (Jack) Wilshere, you look at the likes of (Alex) Oxlade-Chamberlain, (Mathieu) Debuchy coming in at right-back. We’ve never heard of him in the last two years.

“There’s a lot of players, (Andrey) Arshavin was one of the top players in the world.

“He came to Arsenal and he went downhill. He was a shadow of himself by the time he left.

“That’s why players won’t want to go to Arsenal at the moment.

“It’s because of the management and the coaching at the football club, which is sub-standard.”

Arsenal spent a club-record £52m fee on Lyon striker Alexandre Lacazette back in July to bolster their attacking options.

Bosnian defender Sead Kolasinac completed a free transfer to Arsenal from Schalke 04.
