Paul Merson states his prediction for Chelsea v Arsenal
The Arsenal legend doesn't expect the Gunners to beat Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Sunday afternoon
Paul Merson is tipping Chelsea to beat Arsenal 3-0 at Stamford Bridge in the Premier League on Sunday.
The defending champions will be looking to secure their fourth successive Premier League victory to keep pace with title rivals Manchester City and Manchester United.
Chelsea were 2-1 winners against Tottenham Hotspur at Wembley following a 3-2 loss to Burnley on the opening day of the 2017-18 season.
Arsenal haven’t secured a point on the road in the Premier League this season following a 1-0 loss at Stoke City before a heavy 5-0 defeat at Liverpool.
The Gunners have beaten Chelsea in their last two meetings at Wembley after Arsenal got their hands on the Community Shield and the FA Cup.
Arsenal lost 3-1 at Chelsea in their last Premier League meeting as the west London side went on to win the top-flight crown under Antonio Conte.
While Merson believes the Gunners will win if they score the first goal at Stamford Bridge, the Arsenal legend doesn’t anticipate that happening.
“It’s all about the first goal,” Merson told Sky Sports. “If Arsenal score first you will watch and think ‘wow, they look decent’.
“They will be confident and they have good players who look decent when they are winning.
“But when they are losing too many of them just go completely and utterly missing. The shape goes out of the window and if they let in the first goal it could be anything. People are saying to me ‘what a good result against Bournemouth’ but if you could have handpicked any team to play last week it was Bournemouth.
“If Arsenal score first it will be a very interesting match but I don’t think they will.”
Arsenal finished in fifth place in the Premier League table last season to miss out on a place in the Champions League in the 2017-18 campaign.
The Gunners signed Alexandre Lacazette and Sead Kolasinac in the summer transfer window.
