Rio Ferdinand: This is Chelsea’s only weakness this season
Rio Ferdinand believes that Chelsea are the English clubs' best hope of Champions League success this season
Rio Ferdinand believes that Chelsea’s lack of squad depth is the Blues’ only weakness this season.
The west London side have bounced back from a difficult start to the new campaign after they lost to Arsenal in the Community Shield and were then beaten by Burnley in their Premier League opener.
Chelsea have since found their feet and the Blues have notched up victories over Tottenham, Everton and Leicester City in the Premier League to move them up to third place in the table.
The Blues also got their Champions League campaign off to a flying start with a 6-0 thrashing of Qarabag at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday night.
Former Manchester United defender Ferdinand believes that Chelsea look like a very well-balanced team, but feels that their lack of quality throughout the squad could be their only weakness this term.
Ferdinand said on BT Sport on Tuesday night: “Their strength in depth is the only Achilles’ heel I find in the team.
“I find that they’re very well balanced. The manager drills the team daily on tactics. In that sense, I think Chelsea are the best hope in the Champions League of the English teams.
“You can see deficiencies within the other teams’ squads. The Chelsea team are very well rounded.”
Chelsea return to Premier League action on Sunday afternoon with a crunch clash against Arsenal at Stamford Bridge.
Arsenal have beaten the Blues in their most recent two meetings in the FA Cup final and Community Shield, both at Wembley.
Chelsea, though, won the last Premier League meeting 3-1 at Stamford Bridge last season.
