The Spanish forward moved to Chelsea in a £58m deal from La Liga giants Real Madrid in the summer transfer window to bolster Antonio Conte’s attacking options.
Morata was brought in to replace Diego Costa’s goals ahead of the controversial striker’s anticipated move to Atletico Madrid after being deemed surplus to requirements under the Italian coach.
Costa finally secured a loan move to los Rojiblancos last week and the Spanish club have an agreement in place to make the deal permanent at the end of the 2017-18 season.
Morata has helped Chelsea fans to forget about the blow of losing Costa with a return of six goals in six games in the Premier League so far.
Indeed, the 24-year-old scored a brilliant hat-trick in Chelsea’s 4-0 win against Stoke City at the bet365 Stadium last weekend as the summer signing thrived at one of the league’s toughest grounds.
Morata scored the defending champions’ equaliser in a 2-1 win against Atletico Madrid in the Champions League on Wednesday night.
However, former Wimbledon striker Earle considers Chelsea’s clash against Manchester City as a real examination of Morata’s ability to replace Costa.
“The one question is can he delivers goal in the very big games like against Man City,” Earle told NBC Sport. “That’s what we will find out next weekend.”
