And the 26-year-old Belgian playmaker made his mark against his former employers in the second half to covert Manchester City’s dominant performance into a goal.
De Bruyne played a one-two with Gabriel Jesus on the edge of Chelsea’s area before he placed a precise finish past his international team-mate Thibaut Courtois.
Former Liverpool defender Carragher lavished praise on Belgian midfielder De Bruyne for his brilliant opener against the defending Premier League champions.
Carragher wrote on Twitter: “Wow! De Bryune is a superstar!! #CHEMCI”
Chelsea won the Premier League title with two games to spare last season but are facing a battle to retain their top-flight crown given Manchester City’s brilliant start to the campaign.
Manchester City have scored 22 goals in their opening seven Premier League games this term.
