Frank Lampard felt that Alvaro Morata was Chelsea’s best player in the first half of their 1-0 Premier League defeat by Manchester City on Saturday.

The Spanish striker, who signed for the Blues from Real Madrid in the summer transfer window, featured from the start against the Citizens and looked sharp during the opening exchanges.

However, the 24-year-old was forced off before half-time with an apparent hamstring injury and he was replaced by Willian.

Chelsea legend Lampard felt that Morata was the Blues’ best player before his injury ended his afternoon.

Speaking to BT Sport after Morata came off injured, Lampard said: “I think Morata was the bright spark in the first half.

“In the couple of occasions in which Chelsea looked slightly dangerous, it was with him involved.

“He’s a target man for Chelsea. He’s always moving and always wants to be in the right position.”

Kevin De Bruyne put Manchester City ahead when he fired home a brilliant finish in the 67th minute to move Pep Guardiola’s men back above Manchester United to the top of the Premier League table.

It remains to be seen how long Morata will be out of action after his injury setback.

Chelsea return to Premier League action after the international break when they take on Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park on Saturday 14 October.

Saturday’s defeat left them in fourth place in the Premier League table and six points behind leaders Manchester City after seven games of the new season.
