Frank Lampard challenges Eden Hazard to do this at Chelsea
Frank Lampard explains how important Eden Hazard is to Chelsea this season if they are to progress in the Champions League
Frank Lampard believes that Eden Hazard now needs to prove that he can cut it in the latter stages of the Champions League with Chelsea.
The Belgian playmaker has made a strong start to the new campaign with the Blues after being gradually brought back into action by Antonio Conte following his lay-off with an ankle injury.
Hazard was at his imperious best as Chelsea produced a stunning display in their 2-1 victory over Atletico Madrid in the Champions League on Wednesday night.
The 26-year-old playmaker has helped Chelsea to win the Premier League title in two of the last three seasons but he is yet to taste Champions League glory with the west London side.
And Chelsea legend Lampard believes that the midfielder must now show that he is able to cut it in Europe’s elite club competition throughout the course of the season.
Speaking on BT Sport on Wednesday night, Lampard said: “He’s a huge player.
“Now he’s 26. It’s his time, in the biggest stage in club football [the Champions League] to do it.
“He’s done it in the Premier League. He’s done it in fits and starts in the Champions League but I think this is his year to really show what he can do.
“His next step is to do it at this level. His has to come back with a bang now.
“If Chelsea are to go far, he’s going to be so important for them.”
Chelsea are now preparing to return to Premier League action on Saturday afternoon when they take on Manchester City at Stamford Bridge.
The Blues are currently third in the table and know that a victory would move them level on points with Pep Guardiola’s men heading into the international break.
