Jamie Carragher believes there are similarities between Chelsea signing Alvaro Morata and Liverpool legend Fernando Torres.

The defending Premier League champions signed Morata in a £58m deal from La Liga giants Real Madrid in the summer transfer window to improve their attacking options at Stamford Bridge.

Morata wasn’t thought to be Chelsea’s first choice but the title holders moved to sign the Spain international after the Blues missed out on Manchester United striker Romelu Lukaku.

The 24-year-old scored his first Chelsea hat-trick in a 4-0 win against Stoke City at the bet365 Stadium on Saturday afternoon to produce his most impressive performance in a Blues shirt to date.

Morata has now scored six times in six Premier League games to silence some of his critics who suggested the centre-forward would struggle to replace Diego Costa.

Former Liverpool defender Carragher has been impressed with Morata’s impact on the Premier League and has drawn comparisons between the Chelsea signing and Torres.

“Watching that, it reminded me of Torres, they’re a similar type of build and they both burst past people,” Carragher told Monday Night Football on Sky Sports.

“He could have scored a 25-yarder, but when I see a finish like that I automatically think that’s top class, very few players can produce that skill.

“That is better than scoring a worldie or an overhead kick – that’s top class.”

Torres scored 81 goals in 142 appearances in all competitions before completing a £50m move to Chelsea in 2011.

The Blues striker helped the west London side to win the Champions League crown in 2012 as well as helping the Blues to secure the FA Cup and Europa League crowns.
