Gary Cahill is confident Alvaro Morata’s experience of winning the Champions League will prove invaluable in Chelsea’s bid to win the competition.

The Spain international moved to Chelsea in a club-record £58m deal from La Liga giants Real Madrid in the summer transfer window.

Morata won two Serie A titles and finished as a Champions League runner-up during a two-season stint at Juventus before his return to Real Madrid last summer.

The 24-year-old was also part of the Real Madrid squad that won the Champions League crown last season following a 4-1 win against his former club Juventus in Cardiff.

Spain international Morata has already scored three goals in four games in the Premier League this season to hit the ground running at the defending champions.

Chelsea manager Antonio Conte rested Morata and started Michy Batshuayi in the west London side’s 6-0 win against Qarabag in their Champions League opener at Stamford Bridge.

The Blues are hoping to win the competition for the first time since 2012 when Chelsea beat Bayern Munich on penalties in the Champions League final at the Allianz Arena.

Cahill, who was part of that Chelsea team in 2012, believes Morata could have a big role to play in the Champions League this season.

“He knows what it takes to get to the latter stages and to win this competition [the Champions League],” Cahill told BT Sport on Tuesday night.

“Hopefully that will come in useful. That sort of experience will be useful for us. He’s a threat and I hope that continues for us this season.”
