Gianfranco Zola sends message to Chelsea fans about Alvaro Morata
The Chelsea legend raises questions about Alvaro Morata's ability to replace Diego Costa in the long term despite his impressive start
Gianfranco Zola has lifted the lid on some his doubts surrounding Alvaro Morata’s ability to replace Diego Costa at Chelsea.
The defending Premier League champions signed Morata in a £58m deal from La Liga giants Real Madrid in the summer transfer window.
Morata was drafted in to replace Diego Costa after Conte told the controversial striker that he is surplus to requirements following last season’s title success.
However, Costa only sealed his move last week when the 28-year-old move to Atletico Madrid on loan with view to a permanent switch at the end of the campaign.
Chelsea signing Morata hasn’t taken long to win over Chelsea fans following a return of six goals in six games in the Premier League.
The former Juventus forward scored a hat-trick in a 4-0 win at Stoke City last weekend before his equaliser in Chelsea’s 2-1 win at Atletico Madrid in the Champions League on Wednesday night.
Morata will come up against Premier League leaders Manchester City at Stamford Bridge on Saturday evening as he looks to emulate Costa’s success against the Citizens.
The Brazilian-born forward scored Chelsea’s opening goal in their famous 3-1 win at Manchester City in the Premier League last term.
Former Chelsea striker Zola has expressed his reservations about Morata and his ability to replace Costa.
“I have no doubt that it was right for him [Costa] to go,” Zola told Sky Sports.
“He probably has a problem, the team is not made by one player, and I think it’s better for him to go.
“On the temporal level Morata is not on the same level as Costa. Technically he is a great player, he obviously has a lot of qualities, good in the air, good feet.
“He has been with Juventus, Real Madrid, big teams, but didn’t play regularly, and I want to find out why. And this year I think I’m going to get the answers.”
