Phil Neville has described Diego Costa as better than Chelsea signing Alvaro Morata.

The Spain international moved to Chelsea in a £58m deal from Champions League holders Real Madrid in the summer transfer window.

Morata was signed to help replace Costa’s goals after the controversial striker was told he has no future at the defending Premier League champions.

The 24-year-old has netted three times in five games in the Premier League to make a promising start to his Blues career.

Costa sealed a move to Atletico Madrid in a reported £57m deal from Chelsea on Thursday to bring to an end his spell at Stamford Bridge.

The Spanish forward won’t be able to take to the field for los Rojiblancos until January when Atletico Madrid’s transfer ban ends.

Former Manchester United defender Neville claimed that Costa is the better forward than Morata.

“I would rather have Costa than Morata in my team at this moment in time, to be honest with you,” Neville told Sky Sports.

“I think he is better suited to the English game – Morata has great potential, but if you were an opposition manager, you would rather be facing Morata than Costa.

“He is a fantastic player, he scored goals and is someone you would think, ‘I’d love him in my team.’

“Morata is different, he thrives off crosses. Costa you can stick him up there on his own, he will take on the whole of the back four, from the left back to the right back to the centre back. He will try and bully them all.

“Whereas Morata is a little bit more cute in his movements, he thrives a little bit more on crosses, he keeps it pretty simple outside the box.

“But the minute he comes into the box, I actually think he is a better finisher than Costa.

“But if you were asking me as a central defender, I would hate to play against Diego Costa, I really would.

“And Morata is someone who is good in the air, but he has not got that nasty character and streak that Costa has got.”

Costa has scored 20 goals in Chelsea’s two title-winning campaigns under both Jose Mourinho and Antonio Conte.

The Blues have won two Premier League crowns in the past three seasons.

Conte signed six players in the summer transfer window to improve his squad ahead of their return to the Champions League.
