Pat Nevin has praised Antonio Conte for improving Chelsea’s squad depth with some shrewd summer signings.

The defending Premier League champions endured a tough start to the summer transfer window after Manchester Untied hijacked Chelsea’s deal to re-sign Romelu Lukaku.

Conte was forced to rethink his summer transfer plans and the Blues signed Alvaro Morata from Real Madrid following Lukaku’s £75m switch to Old Trafford.

The west London side signed Manchester City goalkeeper Willy Caballero, AS Roma defender Antonio Rudiger and Monaco midfielder Tiemoue Bakayoko to improve Conte’s first-team options.

The defending champions managed to get two summer deals over the line on transfer deadline day as Leicester City midfielder Danny Drinkwater and Torino defender Davide Zappacosta completed late moves.

Chelsea are unbeaten since a 3-2 loss to Burnley on the opening day of the season after three straight Premier League victories before a goalless draw with Arsenal last weekend.

The Blues were resounding 6-0 winners against Qarabag in their Champions League group-stage opener as Conte played his second string at Stamford Bridge.

Former Chelsea winger Nevin is taking plenty of encouragement from the performances of Conte’s signings and back-up players.

“What is hopeful from a Chelsea point of view is that the back-up in the squad is looking so much stronger now than it did just a few games back,” Nevin told Chelsea’s website.

“The summer acquisitions are clearly all perfectly capable of stepping into the first team, which makes me think that far from taking it easy in the domestic cups we will really be going for them this time.

“In the defence and defensive midfield there is a whole bunch of players who will be desperate to get more game time.

“Toni Rudiger, Andreas Christensen, Davide Zappacosta, Danny Drinkwater when fit and even Tiemoue Bakayoko would all really want more minutes on the pitch to be at the top of their respective fitness.”

Chelsea will make the trip to Stoke City in their next Premier League game at the bet365 Stadium on Saturday.
