Ray Wilkins insists he would still rather have Diego Costa than Alvaro Morata in the Chelsea team.

The Premier League champions signed the 24-year-old in a £58m deal from La Liga giants Real Madrid in the summer transfer window.

Morata has already scored three goals in five Premier League games to make an impressive start to the 2017-18 season.

The former Juventus forward has been signed to replace the goal void left by Costa after Antonio Conte informed the controversial striker that he is free to leave.

Costa failed to secure a summer transfer but the 29-year-old is widely expected to secure a return to Atletico Madrid in the January transfer window.

The Brazilian-born striker has scored 40 goals in 61 appearances in their two title-winning seasons in 2014-15 and 2016-17.

However, former Chelsea midfielder Wilkins admits he would rather have Costa in the Blues team than Morata.

“I see a better footballer in Morata – better control, movement and probably quicker,” Wilkins told Sky Sports News. “But when I look at the beast in Costa… he upsets people.

“I’d much rather have Costa than Morata. Why we haven’t got both I don’t know. He should be at Stamford Bridge and then Chelsea would have a proper strike force.

“I just can’t see why Costa is still in Brazil, playing five-a-side football on a beach with his mates.”

Morata won two Serie A titles during his spell at Juventus before the centre-forward lifted the La Liga trophy and the Champions League crown with Real Madrid last term.

Chelsea’s three-game winning run came to an end on Sunday after the west London side played out a goalless draw with bitter rivals Arsenal at Stamford Bridge.
