Rio Ferdinand has warned Antonio Conte that his Chelsea team lacks aggression following Diego Costa’s return to Atletico Madrid.

The Spain international scored 20 times in the Premier League last season to help Antonio Conte win the title in his first season in charge in the English top flight.

Costa had a strained relationship with Conte and the Chelsea boss made the decision to render the centre-forward surplus to requirements at the end of the 2016-17 season.

The 28-year-old secured a return to Atletico Madrid last week after the Spanish side agreed to loan Costa for the remainder of the season before completing a permanent deal next summer.

Alvaro Morata has been drafted in to replace Costa in the Chelsea team following his £58m switch to the defending English champions from Real Madrid back in July.

The 24-year-old got on the score sheet in Chelsea’s 2-1 win against Atletico in the Champions League on Wednesday night to take his goal haul to seven goals since his summer move.

However, Manchester United legend Ferdinand believes Chelsea are still lacking some aggression with Costa no longer in Conte’s starting XI.

“[They miss] that aggression, that nastiness that he’s got. He can get under peoples’ skins. But he does sometimes bring problems in the changing room,” Ferdinand told BT Sport on Wednesday night.

“In terms of quality, this guy makes something out of nothing on many occasions. He’s a ruthless finisher and won two league titles with Chelsea.

“To do that, a centre-forward has to be banging in goals and take responsibility.”

Chelsea will host Premier League leaders Manchester City at Stamford Bridge on Saturday evening.
