Antonio Conte sends ‘unlucky’ message to Chelsea fans about Pedro
The Chelsea boss confirms Pedro Rodriguez is struggling with injury after Sunday's goalless draw with Arsenal
Antonio Conte admits Pedro has been unlucky with injuries at the start of the 2017-18 season after the winger’s latest setback.
The Spanish winger was forced off at half-time of Arsenal’s goalless draw with Chelsea after Pedro was involved in a heavy challenge with his compatriot Nacho Monreal.
The former Barcelona winger was struggling with a knock to his ankle from the Premier League clash which could rule the experienced midfielder out for an extended period of time.
Pedro had only just returned from another injury problem which the winger sustained during their loss to Arsenal on penalties in the Community Shield back in August.
Speaking to at his news conference on Monday about Pedro’s injury problems ahead of their League Cup clash against Nottingham Forest on Wednesday night, Conte shed light on the extend of the winger’s problem.
“Pedro has not been lucky this season,” Conte said.
“He started the season with a bad injury in the Arsenal friendly game where he broke a bone in his face, and then he received a knock on his ankle, and now his leg.
“I hope for him to be luckier in the future. Pedro is trying to recover from the last injury. It’s important for him also to work. Don’t forget when you are injured you can’t work, and sometimes you can lose your best physical condition.
“His last injury is nothing serious but he needs a bit of time to recover.”
Pedro was come into his own in a Chelsea shirt under the management under Conte following a difficult first season at Stamford Bridge in 2015-16.
The Spanish winger scored nine goals and made nine assists in 37 appearances in the Premier League last season.
Chelsea signed Pedro in a £21m deal from Barcelona in the 2015 summer transfer window as Jose Mourinho looked to improve his title-winning squad.
