Antonio Conte told Chelsea must make this signing in January
Paul Merson believes that Chelsea must bring in another striker in the January transfer window
Paul Merson has told Antonio Conte that Chelsea must sign a new striker in the January transfer window if they are to challenge for the title this season.
The Blues bought Alvaro Morata in the summer transfer window as Conte strengthened his attacking options by bringing the Spanish forward to Stamford Bridge.
However, Chelsea also appear to have lost Diego Costa after the Spain striker refused to return to training after the summer break.
Morata has made a strong start to life in England and it looks as if it will not take him long to adapt to the rigours of the Premier League.
However, Merson feels that the Blues are in need of a new centre-forward if they are to be able to sustain a title challenge for the whole season.
Speaking on Sky Sports News on Saturday, Merson said: “I think come January they will have to get another centre-forward, they’ve taken a big chance here.
“It’s alright playing Eden Hazard up front on his own or not playing a centre-forward and at the moment it’s a good enough squad, at the moment and they’re back to their best.”
Chelsea return to Premier League action next weekend with a trip to the bet365 Stadium to take on Stoke City.
The west London club were in impressive form last season as they won the Premier League title in Conte’s first campaign in charge at Stamford Bridge.
However, they were beaten by Arsenal in the FA Cup final at Wembley.
