Michael Owen insisted that Davide Zappacosta was trying to cross the ball before scoring Chelsea’s second goal in their comfortable 6-0 win over Qarabag on Tuesday night.

The Italy international, who as Chelsea’s final signing of the summer transfer window, burst down the right wing and fired in the Blues’ second goal from 30 yards.

It was the summer signing’s first goal for his new club but it appeared that he was indeed trying to cross the ball to his team-mates before mis-hitting it.

Pedro Rodriguez had earlier given Chelsea the lead at Stamford Bridge a brilliant curling effort, before Cesar Azpilicueta added gloss to the scoreline in the second half.

Substitute Tiemoue Bakayoko made it 4-0 in the 71st minute, before Michy Batshuayi made it five in the 78th minute.

Batshuayi then completed the rout when he bundled home a sixth late on.

Speaking about Zappacosta’s goal on BT Sport, Owen said: “Not a chance [did he mean it]. No way was that a shot.

“But fair play to him, it was a brilliant run.

“He deserved it for his positivity. You can’t shoot from there. He just mishit it by about an inch.”

Chelsea will now turn their attentions back to Premier League affairs and their crunch clash against Arsenal at Stamford Bridge on Sunday afternoon.

The Blues have now won their last four games in all competitions after having lost to Arsenal in the Community Shield and Burnley in the Premier League back in August.

Chelsea are aiming to win the Champions League for the first time since 2012 this season after they missed out on a spot in Europe altogether last term.
