Juan Mata admits he was moved to see Old Trafford’s warm reception for Wayne Rooney in Manchester United’s 4-0 win against Everton on Sunday afternoon.
The Red Devils sold Rooney to Everton in the summer transfer window as the 31-year-old secured a return to his boyhood club following a decorated spell at Old Trafford.
Indeed, the former England international return to the Theatre of Dreams as Manchester United’s record goal-scorer but Rooney couldn’t get on the score sheet for his new club.
Antonio Valencia broke the deadlock in the fourth minute before Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Romelu Lukaku and Anthony Martial to score late goals to seal a 4-0 victory.
Mata knows a thing or two about returning to his former Premier League club after the Spain international enjoyed a successful spell at Chelsea before his then club-record move to Manchester United.
The Spanish forward admitted that he was thrilled to see Rooney get a warm reception from the Manchester United fans at Old Trafford.
“I want to highlight Wayne Rooney’s return to Old Trafford,” Mata wrote in his personal blog.
“He’s part of the Manchester United legend and the crowd gave him the ovation that he deserves when he was substituted.
“Seeing that respect from our fans in the stadium to our former captain was really moving. It makes you feel proud of belonging to this club.
“I think Wayne has still a lot of things to say in football and I wish him the best for the rest of the season.”
Manchester United are sitting at the top of the Premier League table following four victories and one stalemate to start the 2017-18 campaign.
The Red Devils signed Romelu Lukaku in a £75m deal from Everton in the summer transfer window.
