Thomas Lemar would have been happy to sign for either Arsenal of Liverpool this summer, according to Monaco vice president Vadim Vasilyev.

The France international was heavily linked with a move to the Premier League during the summer months, with both the Gunners and the Reds said to be keen on signing him.

Arsenal were widely reported to have made a last-ditch deadline day attempt to try and sign Lemar from Monaco with a £92m bid.

However, the 21-year-old attacker ended up staying at Monaco beyond the summer transfer window.

There had been suggestions that Lemar himself had turned down the chance to move to Arsenal, but Monaco chief Vasilyev has revealed that it was the Ligue 1 club who made the decision to keep him.

The Monaco vice president told Russian outlet TASS: “It was not easy.

“Thomas wanted to go to Arsenal and to Liverpool, but we had discussions and we took a communal decision so that he could stay here.

“He is a very important player for us. We could not have sold him, it would have affected the entire team and the individuals.”

Arsenal return to Premier League action with a home clash against Bournemouth on Saturday afternoon.

Liverpool, meanwhile, are preparing for their crunch showdown with Manchester City at The Etihad on Saturday lunchtime.
