Jurgen Klopp discusses his feelings about Philippe Coutinho as he prepares to make his return for Liverpool FC this season
Jurgen Klopp has insisted that he will not rush Philippe Coutinho back to action for Liverpool.
The Brazilian playmaker’s future was a source of constant speculation throughout the summer transfer window as he was heavily linked with a move to Barcelona.
Coutinho handed in a transfer request in a bid to force through a move to Camp Nou but a switch failed to materialise as he ended up staying at Liverpool.
Klopp opted not to play Coutinho in Liverpool’s 5-0 thrashing by Manchester City in the Premier League on Saturday afternoon.
Liverpool return to Champions League action with a home clash against Sevilla at Anfield on Wednesday night.
However, Klopp has once again insisted that he will not rush Coutinho back into the team, despite the 25-year-old having played for Brazil during the international break.
Klopp told a news conference before Liverpool’s showdown with the Spanish side: “It was a decision made with the season in mind. He came back from a long flight, after two substitute appearances and three weeks without training.
“We play on Wednesday, we play on Saturday, we play, play, play, play, play. I will have the situation all the time now over the next three or four weeks.
“We thought it best to give him three or four days proper training and then he’ll be available for us, which is very good news.
“Phil is a fantastic player, and hopefully we can use him as quickly as possible.”
Liverpool booked their place in Europe’s elite club competition with a fourth-placed finish in the Premier League last season.
The Reds then host Burnley at Anfield in their next Premier League game as they bid to get back to winning ways on Saturday afternoon.
Klopp brought in four new players in the summer after Liverpool signed Mohamed Salah, Dominic Solanke, Andy Robertson and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.
