Jurgen Klopp told Liverpool fans don’t want 25-year-old to play
Eamon Dunphy questions why Jurgen Klopp persists with Alberto Moreno when most Liverpool fans know the left-back is a liability
Eamon Dunphy has questioned why Jurgen Klopp persists with starting Alberto Moreno in his Liverpool team.
The Spain international was omitted from the Liverpool line-up throughout most of the 2016-17 season as Klopp played James Milner in an orthodox left-back role.
Moreno struggled with some high-profile mistakes in the Premier League and the Europa League in the 2015-16 season after Klopp took over the reins from Brendan Rodgers at Anfield.
However, the former Sevilla defender has fought his way back into Klopp’s plans this term despite being frozen out last season.
While Moreno has impressed going forward from left-back, the Spanish defender continues to be caught out when attempting to protect the Liverpool goal.
Former Manchester United midfielder Dunphy can’t understand why Klopp continues to place his faith in Moreno when most Liverpool fans acknowledge the left-back is a weak link.
“How Moreno is back in the team…?” Dunphy told RTE Sport. “He leaves two perfectly good left-backs on the bench and has done it since the start of the season.
“He’s got James Milner on the bench, who was a very good stand-in left-back last year and Robertson who they bought in the summer and is Scotland left-back, a very good player. But he wilfully plays Moreno.
“Every Liverpool fan knows about Moreno. Why doesn’t Jurgen Klopp know?”
Liverpool signed Scottish defender Andy Robertson in an £8m deal from Hull City in the summer transfer window.
Milner has been moved back into midfield this season and started in a central role in the Liverpool team in Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Burnley.
The Reds have already conceded 14 times in eight games in all competitions so far this season.
