Rio Ferdinand makes blunt prediction about Liverpool FC in Champions League
Liverpool won't win the Champions League title this season, according to Rio Ferdinand
Rio Ferdinand has told Jurgen Klopp to forget about Liverpool winning the Champions League title this season.
The Reds secured a return to the competition thanks to a fourth-place finish in the Premier League table last season after finishing above Arsenal and Manchester United.
Liverpool still had to get past Hoffenheim in the Champions League playoff round but were 6-3 winners on aggregate against the Bundesliga club to secure their place in the group stage.
The Reds were dominant in their first Champions League fixture at Anfield in the group stage but Klopp’s men squandered a lead to succumb to a 2-2 draw with Spanish side Sevilla.
Liverpool were in Russia on Tuesday night and Philippe Coutinho scored a superb goal on his return to their Champions League starting line-up but the Reds couldn’t convert one of their 16 shots on target into a winner.
The Merseyside outfit should still qualify for the knockout phase given their back-to-back games against Slovenian side Maribor.
However, Manchester United defender Ferdinand has told Liverpool to forget about an unlikely Champions League title success this term.
“I don’t see this Liverpool team having aspirations of winning this tournament,” Ferdinand told BT Sport.
“There are too many better teams. But you’d like to get through to have an opportunity to play some of the better teams in the tournament.”
Liverpool upset the odds to win the Champions League crown in 2005 after a penalty shootout victory over AC Milan secured their fifth European Cup title.
