Jose Mourinho has claimed that Philippe Coutinho would have ended up signing for Barcelona this summer if Neymar hadn’t joined Paris Saint-Germain.

The Brazilian playmaker’s future was a relentless source of speculation throughout the summer transfer window as Barcelona looked to bring in a replacement for Neymar, who joined PSG in a world-record transfer deal.

However, Liverpool were determined to keep hold of Coutinho and refused to sell the talismanic forward to the Spanish club.

Coutinho was clearly keen on a move to Camp Nou and even handed in a transfer request in a bid to secure the switch.

However, Barcelona were unable to agree a fee with the Premier League club as Coutinho ended up staying at Anfield.

But Manchester United manager Mourinho believes that things would have turned out very differently had Neymar not moved to PSG.

Mourinho said in an interview with the Times: “Neymar changed everything.

“If the biggest transfer in history had still been [Paul] Pogba, I think Philippe Coutinho would now be in Barcelona at £101m.”

Coutinho could make his first appearance of the season for Liverpool when the Reds take on Manchester City at The Etihad on Saturday lunchtime.
