Liverpool haven’t made any progress under Jurgen Klopp, Kevin Kilbane has claimed.

The Merseyside outfit appointed Klopp as Brendan Rodgers’ successor in October 2015 following a disappointing start to the season.

The German coach led Liverpool to the EFL Cup and Europa League finals in the 2015-16 season but the campaign ended in disappointment following losses to Manchester City and Sevilla.

Klopp led Liverpool to a fourth-place finish in his first full season at Anfield despite the Merseyside outfit conceding 42 times in 38 games last term.

The Reds shipped 148 goals in their final three seasons under Rodgers as the Northern Irishman faced criticism of his team’s erratic defending.

While Liverpool’s defensive record was their best last season since Jamie Carragher hung up his boots, Klopp is still facing criticism for failing to eradicate the problem.

The Merseyside outfit have already conceded 13 goals in their opening seven games in all competitions this season as defensive issues continue to undermine Liverpool’s progress.

Former Everton defender Kilbane doesn’t believe Klopp has made any real progress at the 18-time English champions since the former Borussia Dortmund coach replaced Rodgers.

“Jurgen Klopp has great character. He has been fantastic for the Premier League. Liverpool fans admire him,” Kilbane told Irish radio station Newstalk on Thursday night.

“When will it get to the stage when we start to seriously question him and start to look at what he has done at Liverpool?

“Has he dramatically improved them? No. He hasn’t really.

“Yes going forward he has signed one or two great attacking players.

“Yet defensively, the thing Liverpool have been crying out for over the past five years, he hasn’t changed them.

“There is nothing different about Liverpool.”
