Paul Merson predicts where Liverpool FC will finish this term
The Arsenal legend doesn't expect Liverpool to win the Premier League title this season
Paul Merson has ruled out Liverpool winning the Premier League title this season.
The Reds have made a mixed start to the Premier League season following a return of seven points from their opening four Premier League games.
Liverpool underline their title credentials with a resounding 4-0 victory over rivals Arsenal at Anfield before the international break last month.
However, Jurgen Klopp’s side slumped to a humiliating 5-0 loss to title favourites Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium last weekend, although Sadio Mane’s red card left the Reds with 10 men for the final 52 minutes.
Liverpool finished in fourth place in their first full Premier League campaign under Klopp but the Reds still appear some way short of a title challenge.
Indeed, the Reds slumped to a 1-1 draw with Burnley at Anfield on Saturday to extend their winless run to three games in all competitions.
Former Arsenal midfielder Merson doesn’t consider Liverpool to be genuine contenders to win the Premier League crown this term.
“I know they kept a clean sheet against Arsenal but they are not going to win the league with that defence,” Merson told Sky Sports.
Liverpool finished in second place in the Premier League on three occasions (2002, 2009 and 2014) but the Reds have never won the top-flight crown since the division’s launch in 1992.
Only Manchester United have won more top-flight titles than Liverpool’s 18 despite their poor record in the Premier League era.
