Steven Gerrard admits that Philippe Coutinho is "impossible" to defend against after his sparkling performance for Liverpool FC
Steven Gerrard has admitted that Philippe Coutinho is “impossible” to defend against after the playmaker underlined his importance to Liverpool on Saturday.
Coutinho was heavily linked with a transfer to Barcelona in the summer window but a move for the 25-year-old failed to materialise as Liverpool managed to keep hold of the talismanic forward.
The Brazilian has been reintegrated back into the Liverpool side and showed his importance to Jurgen Klopp’s team on Saturday when he produced a man of the match performance in the 3-2 win at Leicester.
Coutinho scored one and set up another as Liverpool returned to winning ways in the Premier League and moved up to fifth place in the table.
Gerrard played alongside Coutinho during the final few years of his glittering career at Liverpool.
And the former Liverpool captain has lifted the lid on what it was like playing in the same team as Coutinho.
Speaking on BT Sport on Saturday night, Liverpool legend Gerrard said: “He’s impossible to defend against.
“When I used to train against him, I’d hate to be on the opposition five-a-side team. I wouldn’t go near him because he can embarrass you.
“He can go both ways and he’s two or three steps ahead of defenders. He’s so clever.”
Liverpool return to Champions League action on Tuesday night when the take on Russian side Spartak Moscow in their next group game.
They kicked off their European campaign with a 2-2 draw against Sevilla at Anfield earlier this month.
