Rio Ferdinand explains why there are reasons to be positive for Liverpool FC despite their stuttering form

Rio Ferdinand believes that Jurgen Klopp should be encouraged by the amount of chances Liverpool are creating despite the Reds’ stuttering form this season.

Klopp watched his side be held to a frustrating 1-1 draw by Spartak Moscow in the Champions League on Tuesday night as they failed to pick up their first group-stage win over the season.

Liverpool have struggled to string together a consistent run of results so far this season and although they have earned plenty of praise for their attacking displays, their defending has left a lot to be desired at times.

The Merseyside outfit have conceded more goals than any other team in the top half of the Premier League table this season, but they are still in fifth place as they look to mount a title challenge.

Liverpool created plenty of chances in Moscow on Tuesday night and former Manchester United defender Ferdinand reckons that that should be a sign of encouragement for Klopp.

Speaking on BT Sport on Tuesday night, Ferdinand said: “The bonus he [Klopp] can take out of it [the draw in Moscow] is that Liverpool are creating chances.

“If Liverpool came to Moscow had no chances and drew 0-0, that’s when he needs to worry. They are creating chances.

“[But] they need to be cold in front of goal like these two guys beside me [Frank Lampard and Michael Owen]. If Lampard or Owen were in the team, they’d win comfortably.”

Liverpool will now turn their attentions back towards Premier League affairs and their trip to St James’ Park to take on Newcastle United on Sunday afternoon.

The Reds finished fourth in Klopp’s first full campaign in charge last term.
