Philippe Coutinho has confirmed that he did want to sign for Barcelona in the summer transfer window but insists he is now focused on having a good season with Liverpool.

The Brazilian playmaker was heavily linked with a transfer to the Camp Nou towards the end of the window as the Spanish side looked to bring in a replacement for Neymar.

Liverpool refused to do business with the Spanish club and opted to keep hold of the 25-year-old, who only signed a new five-year contract with the Reds back in January.

Coutinho made his first Premier League start of the season on Saturday during Liverpool’s 1-1 draw with Burnley at Anfield, as he played 78 minutes in front of the Reds’ home fans.

The playmaker has been keeping quiet about his situation but has now lifted the lid about his honest thoughts on his situation.

Coutinho said in an interview with ESPN Brasil: “I was interested by the offer but now my focus is on having a good season with Liverpool and with the national team.

“It’s an honour to receive an offer from this club [Barcelona] but it is also an honour playing for Liverpool, I’ve always respected the club and the supporters.”

Liverpool return to Premier League action next weekend with a trip to the King Power Stadium to take on Leicester City.

The Reds are aiming to build on their fourth-placed finish in the top flight last term as Jurgen Klopp looks to steer the Merseyside outfit to the Premier League title.
