Jurgen Klopp makes admission to Liverpool FC fans about Philippe Coutinho
Jurgen Klopp delivers the latest update on Philippe Coutinho's fitness at Liverpool FC this season
Jurgen Klopp has admitted that Philippe Coutinho is still working his way back to full fitness for Liverpool.
The Liverpool playmaker’s future was a relentless source of speculation during the summer transfer window as he emerged as a prime target for Barcelona.
However, the Premier League club refused to do business with the Spanish giants and opted to keep Coutinho at Anfield beyond the summer transfer window.
Coutinho made his first start of the season for Liverpool during the 1-1 draw with Burnley at Anfield in the Premier League last weekend.
The Brazilian playmaker then played the first half of Liverpool’s disappointing 2-0 loss to Leicester City in the third round of the League Cup on Tuesday night.
Klopp has told Liverpool fans that they will have to be patient with Coutinho as he works his way back to full fitness following his lay-off with a back problem.
Klopp told his post-match news conference on Tuesday night: “That was the plan before the game [to take him off at half-time], he needs match time but it was not for a second the plan [to keep him on] and it was not allowed to let him play again for 90 minutes, or 60 or 70 or 80 or whatever.
“It was clear that 45 is the limit, we need to make him fit but we cannot push him through. That’s all.”
Asked if Coutinho is on schedule to be back fit soon, Klopp replied: “Yes, of course. 80 something [minutes] at the weekend and then 45 today.”
Liverpool will aim to return to winning ways in the Premier League on Saturday night when they once again face Leicester City at the King Power Stadium.
The Reds have not won in the top flight since their 4-0 thrashing of Arsenal in the Premier League at Anfield back in August.
