Owen Hargreaves has warned Liverpool that signing Virgil van Dijk in January is not going to “fix” their defensive problems.

The Reds were heavily linked with a move to bring the Netherlands international to Anfield during the summer transfer window but a move failed to materialise for the defender.

Liverpool were forced to issue a public apology to Southampton and withdrew their interest in the player after they were accused of an alleged illegal approach by the Saints.

It remains to be seen whether Van Dijk will still seal a move to Liverpool in future transfer windows or not, but former midfielder Hargreaves believes that the Reds’ defensive issues cannot be solved by signing one player.

Hargreaves told BBC Radio 5 live: “I would want to play as a centre-back where I was a little bit protected, where I had people in front of me, because if you look at look at Liverpool and Manchester City, van Dijk is not going to fix Liverpool.

“As good as he is, and he’s one of the best, he’ll play for Barcelona or Real Madrid one day, in my opinion he’s that good.”

Liverpool ended up signing four players in the summer transfer window after tying up deals for Mohamed Salah, Dominic Solanke, Andy Robertson and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.

The Reds also agreed a deal to sign Naby Keita from RB Leipzig, with the midfielder set to officially join the Reds next summer.

Liverpool finished in fourth place last season and kicked off their Champions League group campaign with a 2-2 draw against Sevilla on Wednesday night.
