Emile Heskey has backed Jurgen Klopp’s transfer policy at Liverpool despite criticism of the Reds manager.

The Merseyside outfit signed four players in the summer transfer window to improve their squad ahead of a return to the Champions League.

Liverpool recruited AS Roma winger Mohamed Salah, Chelsea teenager Dominic Solanke, Hull City defender Andy Robertson and Arsenal midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.

The Reds have also agreed a £48m deal to sign RB Leipzig midfielder Naby Keita at the end of the 2017-18 campaign.

Klopp, though, was unable to improve his centre-half options after Liverpool missed out on Southampton’s Netherlands international Virgil van Dijk.

Liverpool have already conceded eight times in their opening four games in the Premier League games to raise further questions about their defence.

Ex Reds striker Heskey issued his backing for Klopp’s approach to the transfer market.

“You always want the club to keep buying players to improve all the time,” Heskey told Liverpool Echo.

“He is doing that, but it’s a journey not a sprint. You have got to understand people just want them to go and buy, but you can’t just buy all the time.

“I think he is doing it the right way and taking his time with it.”

Liverpool were impressive 4-0 winners against title rivals Arsenal at Anfield in their last Premier League game before the international break.

The Reds lost 5-0 to Premier League title favourites Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium last weekend following Sadio Mane’s sending off.

Klopp’s side will host Sevilla in their opening Champions League group-stage game on Wednesday night.
