Jurgen Klopp told Liverpool FC ‘naive’ not to sign key player
Arsenal legend Liam Brady accuses Jurgen Klopp of "naive" management following Liverpool's poor defensive performances this season
Liam Brady has accused Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp of being “naive” for failing to sign a new central defender in the summer.
The Reds have struggled to perform defensively in the Premier League so far this season to leave Liverpool off the pace in the title race.
The Merseyside outfit have already conceded nine times in five Premier League games this term, including a 5-0 loss to Manchester City.
Klopp made four signings in the summer transfer window but Scottish full-back Andy Robertson was the only defensive recruit.
The Reds made a play to sign Virgil van Dijk but the Netherlands international remained at Southampton as the Saints dug their heels in over the club captain.
Liverpool haven’t made a marked improvement when it comes to defending since Klopp took over from Brendan Rodgers, who also struggled to sort out the club’s back four following Jamie Carragher’s retirement.
Former Arsenal forward Brady accused Klopp of being “naive” over his failure to sign a proven centre-half in the summer transfer window.
“The question is why he didn’t move in the transfer market to sign a central defenders,” Brady told RTE Sport.
“We know a lot of teams are looking for a strong central defender and there aren’t many out there to be fair to Klopp.
“But not to make any effort to do it and put his faith in the lads he has at the moment is naive.
“It’s almost like he thinks they’ll score more goals than opposition.
“With a defence like that they’ll have to score a lot of goals.”
Liverpool finished in fourth place in the Premier League table last season to secure a return to Champions League football.
The Reds signed AS Roma winger Mohamed Salah, Chelsea teenager Dominic Solanke and Arsenal star Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain in the summer.
