Steven Gerrard has joked that Liverpool fans need to “pray” that Philippe Coutinho decides to commit his long-term future to the Anfield side.

The Brazil international was heavily linked with a move to La Liga giants Barcelona throughout the summer transfer window but a deal failed to materialise despite the Spanish club’s best efforts.

Indeed, the La Liga leaders were rumoured to have made at least three offers to sign the 25-year-old attacker but the Reds rebutted the approaches as Jurgen Klopp looked to keep his star man.

Coutinho handed in a transfer request in August in an attempt to force through a move but Liverpool refused to alter their stance and the South American remained at Anfield beyond transfer deadline day.

The former Inter Milan winger missed the opening five games of the Premier League season due to a back problem before making his return in a 2-2 draw with Sevilla in the Champions League earlier this month.

Coutinho made his first Premier League start at the King Power Stadium on Saturday evening and the Liverpool number 10 scored a brilliant free-kick in a 3-2 win against Leicester.

Speaking to BT Sport’s Premier League Tonight show on Saturday, former Liverpool captain Gerrard was asked what the Reds can do to ensure Coutinho sticks around at Anfield for a long time.

Gerrard replied: “Pray!”

He added: “Listen, he’s South American. His dream is to go to Barcelona. I think the key in this situation is whether Barcelona come back or if they’ll be upset that he didn’t move.

“Liverpool will want to keep him for a long, long time, there’s no doubt about it.”
