Liverpool needed to sign a top-class centre-half and a goalkeeper in the summer transfer window, Robbie Savage says.

The Reds lost 5-0 to title rivals Manchester City in the Premier League last weekend to undermine their title bid, before they were held to a 1-1 draw by Burnley on Saturday.

Liverpool have already conceded nine times in four games in the 2017-18 Premier League season so far.

The Merseyside outfit signed four players in the summer transfer window but failed to improve two key positions.

AS Roma winger Mohamed Salah, Chelsea teenager Dominic Solanke, Hull City defender Andy Robertson and Arsenal midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain were all recruited by Jurgen Klopp.

However, the former Borussia Dortmund coach failed to sign a new goalkeeper or a new centre-half despite their obvious frailties in those positions.

Former Leicester City and Manchester United midfielder Savage suggested that Klopp was wrong to overlook recruitments in those two areas.

“Liverpool should have brought a top-class centre-half and goalkeeper in the summer,” Savage told BBC Radio 5 Live.

Liverpool have beaten Arsenal and Crystal Palace in the Premier League this season but dropped points in a 3-3 stalemate with Watford.

The Reds ended up in fourth place in the Premier League last term ahead of Arsenal in Klopp’s second full season in charge.
