Liverpool keep tabs on promising 18-year-old to improve defence – report
Liverpool are looking at RB Leipzig defender Dayot Upamecano to improve their defensive options, according to reports in Germany
Liverpool are examining the possibility of signing RB Leipzig teenager Dayot Upamecano to improve their defensive options, according to reports in Germany.
Bild, as quoted by The Sun, is reporting that Liverpool are planning another raid on the Bundesliga outfit after reaching an agreement to sign Guinea international Naby Keita at the end of the current season during the summer transfer window.
The same article states that Jurgen Klopp is looking to resolve Liverpool’s well-documented problems at the back after conceding 16 goals in nine games in all competitions this season.
However, RB Leipzig are prepared to offer the teenager a new long-term deal which would include an £88m contract release clause to warn off potential suitors.
Upamecano moved to the German club from Austrian side Red Bull Salzburg in the January transfer window to follow the same route as Keita into the Bundesliga.
The France Under-19 international has already made 17 appearances for RB Leipzig since his switch to the German top flight.
Liverpool were linked with a move to sign Netherlands international Virgil van Dijk from Southampton in the summer transfer window but failed to agree a deal with the Saints.
Fact-file: Dayot Upamecano
Dayot Upamecano was linked with a move to Liverpool’s bitter rivals Manchester United before completing a £2.2m move to Red Bull Salzburg in 2015.
The teenager won the European Under-17 championship with France in 2015 to further underline his promising talent.
The centre-half made 22 appearances for Red Bull Salzburg during his 18 months at the Austrian club before securing a switch to RB Leipzig.
The Bundesliga outfit coughed up a transfer fee in the region of £10m for the France youth international.
