Garth Crooks has praised Liverpool for keeping Philippe Coutinho in the Premier League for the 2017-18 season.

The Brazil international was aggresively pursued by La Liga giants Barcelona in the summer transfer window but the Reds underlined their number 10 wasn’t for sale.

Coutinho handed in a transfer request in an attempt to force through a move to Barcelona but Liverpool rejected the attacking midfielder’s demands.

The 25-year-old missed Liverpool’s opening four games of the Premier League season due to a back injury before being named in the starting line-up at Leicester City last weekend.

Coutinho teed up Mohamed Salah to make the breakthrough with a superb cross before the Brazilian midfielder curled a delicious free-kick past Leicester shot stopper Kasper Schmeichel.

The Liverpool number 10 has scored 13 goals and has made seven assists in 31 appearances in the Premier League last season.

Former Spurs legend Crooks was impressed with Coutinho’s return to the Liverpool side and is grateful that the Reds managed to keep the number 10 at Anfield for another season.

“I must be honest, I thought Liverpool had lost Coutinho to Barcelona and the club must have done something very special to convince him to stay,” Crooks told BBC Sport.

“I love to watch the Brazilian play every week so thank you, Liverpool. This player is what football is all about.”

Liverpool signed Coutinho in an £8.5m deal from Serie A giants Inter Milan in the 2013 January transfer window.

The Reds signed four players in the summer transfer window last term.
